We all shall make an effort to preserve the unique nature and cultural environment of the island. Hailuoto is a result of land rising from the sea and was originally a cluster of islands instead of one. The island keeps on growing even further. The value of the environment and nature is based on its diverse elements – the island has lush areas by the shoreline and barren sandy moors.
Hailuoto natural environment is an asset and we do our best to preserve it for future generations by different protection programmes. Protection covers birds, shoreline and unique esker formations. The rising shoreline is constantly changing and thus forms a live conservation area.
The built environment in Hailuoto is characterised by well-preserved traditional buildings and therefore, together with its unique nature, Hailuoto was designated one of the national landscapes in Finland and the only one with national landscape covering the entire municipality.
